Mumbai
Mumbai’s first double-decker flyover was inaugurated in the western suburbs of Mira-Bhayandar. The structure, which integrates a Metro viaduct with a flyover on Metro Line-9, has been designed to improve daily commuting for local residents
The flyover, which stretches about 1 km and is elevated 5.5 meters above the existing road, is intended to reduce traffic congestion at key junctions such as Pleasant Park, Hatkesh, and Silver Park. It has been constructed to accommodate heavy traffic and multi-axle vehicles. Modern features like signage and lighting have been included in its design.
It is expected that travel time will be cut by 8 to 10 minutes, leading to improved vehicle flow and reduced fuel consumption. The flyover is also anticipated to help lower greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution.
During construction, challenges included the relocation of 3 km of the Dahanu-Versova power line, which was elevated to 75 meters above the ground. The use of advanced technology allowed for construction to proceed without major traffic disruptions. The flyover is viewed as an important development for Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure.
