Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the rising incidents of rape in India and emphasized the need for genuine action against such severe crimes. He criticized the handling of protests, drawing comparisons between the 2020 farmers’ protest and the student protests in West Bengal. Jha pointed out the inadequate responses to these protests, suggesting that there is a lack of proper understanding of how to address them.
Indirectly referencing BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s comments on the farmers’ protest, Jha highlighted the need for leaders to show empathy towards serious issues like rape. He stressed that every leader, including the Prime Minister, should be deeply affected by such crimes, whether it is the Kolkata incident, the Hathras case, or the Bilkis Bano case.
Jha also questioned why such issues persist, noting that the country seems to have learned nothing from the Nirbhaya case. He urged that actions must match words to create a safer environment for women.
He condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s derogatory Miya Muslim remarks, arguing that such language undermines the Constitution. Jha also criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s provocative statements and accused the BJP of dog-whistle politics and polarization.
Mocking recent efforts to rename railway stations, Jha sarcastically suggested that this would not resolve any real issues and joked about the need for a department dedicated to renaming.
