On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the West Bengal government to ensure full security for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, amid concerns of potential mob attacks against him and his family.
Ghosh, who has been under intense scrutiny following the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital earlier this month, sought police protection through a plea to Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj. Justice Bhardwaj instructed the state administration to provide comprehensive security for Ghosh and his family.
In court, Ghosh’s lawyer argued that both Ghosh and his family felt unsafe and required protection from either state or central forces. In response, the state’s counsel confirmed that a police picket had already been set up outside Ghosh’s residence in Beliaghata, Kolkata, and that the local police were monitoring the situation closely.
The court emphasized the need for rigorous security measures to prevent any lapses. Meanwhile, Ghosh has been attending interrogations at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He faces allegations of attempting to cover up the incident after the victim’s body was discovered on August 9 with 14 injuries.
The Calcutta High Court also ordered the state Health Department not to appoint Ghosh as the head of any medical college until further notice.
