Chinese authorities are stepping up measures to prevent the spread of the mpox virus as global cases continue to rise. Starting August 15 and lasting for six months, travelers arriving in China from regions with confirmed mpox infections must declare any exposure or symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or rashes to customs officials.

If travelers show symptoms or have been exposed to mpox, customs officers will conduct medical checks, including sampling and testing for the virus. Additionally, vehicles, containers, and cargo from affected regions will be cleaned if they are found to be contaminated or potentially contaminated.

The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, along with the National Health Commission, has instructed local branches to work closely with customs and other relevant authorities to quickly identify and manage mpox cases.

Mpox mainly spreads through close physical contact, particularly during sexual activity, though everyday contact carries a lower risk, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Individuals who believe they have been exposed to mpox or are showing symptoms are advised to seek medical attention immediately.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern, marking the second such global alert in two years. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concerns about the potential for further spread, particularly in Africa and beyond.
