On Thursday, the Australian government imposed sanctions on several Israelis linked to settler violence in the West Bank. This marks the first time Australia has taken such action against Israelis for settlement-related activities.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong announced financial penalties and travel bans on seven Israelis and a youth group involved in violent acts against Palestinians. These acts include assaults, sexual violence, and torture, resulting in serious injuries and deaths. The youth group sanctioned is known for inciting and committing violence against Palestinian communities.
Wong emphasized Australia’s stance that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories are illegal under international law. She urged Israel to hold those responsible for settler violence accountable and to stop its settlement activities, which escalate tensions and undermine the chances for a two-state solution.
On ABC radio, Wong highlighted that the sanctions represent a significant penalty, reflecting Australia’s strong stance on the issue.
