Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, wrote to Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay on Wednesday expressing his concerns about feeling insecure following an alleged attack attempt by Trinamool Congress MLA Tapan Chatterjee. In his letter, Adhikari claimed that Chatterjee used abusive language in front of other MLAs, making him feel threatened within the Assembly.
Adhikari stated that this incident marks the second time he and his colleagues have felt unsafe due to threats from ruling party members, particularly in the absence of adequate personal security within the Assembly. He urged the Speaker to take responsibility for the security within the House and highlighted the need for a review of the current security arrangements, which restrict the entry of Central Security Forces.
In a social media post, Adhikari described the incident, saying that Chatterjee confronted him aggressively while he was with reporters, using abusive language and displaying a threatening attitude. He has requested that the Speaker initiate criminal proceedings against Chatterjee.
A video of the altercation has circulated widely on social media. BJP’s chief whip, Shankar Ghosh, criticized the situation, calling it shameful that an elected representative faces such threats inside the Assembly. In response, Chatterjee denied the allegations, accusing Adhikari of defaming him and his family at a recent public meeting.
