Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is gearing up for a significant infrastructure overhaul as it plans to commence white topping on around 150 kilometers of city roads.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, during an inter-departmental meeting on Tuesday, outlined preparations for the imminent commencement of white topping across Bengaluru. Currently, 13 out of 15 planned packages have been finalized, with contractors already mobilized. The remaining packages await governmental approval.

Critical to the success of the project is the seamless relocation of utilities such as water and sewer pipes, electrical cables, and gas lines. Nath highlighted the importance of coordinating these efforts with agencies like BWSSB, BESCOM, KPTCL, and GAIL to avoid damage to newly laid roads post-completion.

Key roads slated for white topping include Tannery Road, Mosque Road, DJ Halli main road, and Bull Temple Road, among others. The initiative also entails installing utility ducts alongside these roads to accommodate future maintenance without disrupting traffic flow.

Traffic management poses a significant challenge during these works. Nath stressed the need for close collaboration with traffic police to implement alternative routes and minimize congestion. Chief Engineer Prahlad estimated that operations, running day and night, will cover approximately 150 kilometers across the city.

The Karnataka government’s approval of Rs 800 crore for this project underscores its importance in addressing Bengaluru’s longstanding road infrastructure issues. Previous phases have already seen 145 kilometers of roads white-topped under earlier urban development plans.
