Mines and Geology department officials confirmed that a spot visit was conducted to Pavoor-Uliya Island by a team of Senior Scientists in response to media reports on illegal sand extraction. In a release, it was stated that no illegal sand extraction activities were found during the visit.
The team observed that the island remains intact, with only sand mixed with organic soil on its eastern side having eroded due to the absence of vegetation and water flow from the river. The presence of lemon grass growing on the organic soil indicates that no recent sand extraction has occurred near the island. Physical verification revealed that while revenue records indicate the island’s area as 98 acres, its actual size is 30.5 acres. The department clarified that none of the island’s parts have been submerged.
