Two newly-elected Trinamool Congress legislators, Sayantika Banerjee from Baranagar and Reyat Sarkar from Bhagawangola, opted not to attend the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan despite an invitation from West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose. Instead, they staged a demonstration within the state Assembly premises, urging the Governor to administer their oaths there.
Displaying posters that read Waiting for the arrival of Hon. Governor for oath alongside their election certificates, Banerjee expressed concern over uncertainties surrounding their official induction as legislators. I’m unsure if I can officially declare myself a legislator after winning. It’s crucial the Governor clarifies who will administer our oath, as the Assembly is our workplace, she emphasized.
Sarkar echoed these sentiments, stating, We are eager to take oath as MLAs and are prepared with all necessary documents. The Governor must ensure our participation in the ceremony.
The situation has cast doubt on their involvement in legislative proceedings. Raj Bhavan authorities emphasized the Governor’s constitutional authority over oath ceremonies, warning of penalties for participating without clearance. Meanwhile, the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly hinted at raising the issue with President Murmu if necessary.
This development underscores ongoing tensions over procedural matters within the state legislature, highlighting the delicate balance between constitutional mandates and legislative protocols.
