The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and other districts in south interior Karnataka, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall until June 26th. This weather advisory comes in light of a cyclonic circulation off the Gujarat coast, expected to bring significant precipitation across the region.
The forecasted rainfall is anticipated to provide relief to the Malnad region and coastal districts, which have experienced below-average rainfall since the onset of the monsoon. According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) data, the monsoon has showcased varied patterns across the state. While Bengaluru Urban and North Karnataka have received “excess” and “large excess” rainfall amounts respectively, coastal and Malnad districts have encountered rainfall deficits through June.
Bengaluru Urban, for instance, has recorded 135.3 mm of rainfall between June 1st and 24th, marking a 107% increase compared to its normal average for the same period. The IMD’s alert advises residents and authorities to remain cautious amidst the expected weather conditions, emphasizing preparedness and safety measures during this period of heightened rainfall activity.
