Ulsoor Lake, a historic water body in Bengaluru’s central business district, is set to undergo significant development costing Rs 20 crore. The lake, known for its historical significance dating back to Kempe Gowda II’s era in the 16th century and later renovated during the British regime, faces pollution challenges from sewage inflow.
Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad emphasized the importance of preserving Ulsoor Lake, highlighting ongoing efforts during a groundbreaking ceremony for new fencing. “The lake will undergo desilting and comprehensive development to restore its ecological balance,” Arshad stated, noting discussions with the Chief Commissioner of BBMP are underway.
Executive Engineer Nithya J, overseeing the project, outlined key initiatives including desilting, installation of floating islands, and the addition of aerators to enhance oxygen levels. “A bathymetric survey with 80% accuracy has been conducted to guide the desilting process, which will take up to a year,” she explained.
The development plan includes pathway enhancements, fencing, and the creation of islands within the lake and wetland areas. Measures such as installing a sluice gate and utilizing gabion technology for bund protection aim to sustain the lake’s water holding capacity and ecological health.
