Experts Advocate Scientific Methods For Jasmine Cultivation

Must read

Udupi

In the Udupi, Karkala, and Kaup regions, most families depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The Shankarapura area is known for jasmine farming, which has strong market demand, especially during marriage seasons, temple fairs, and religious rituals. However, maintaining jasmine plants during the rainy season is challenging. Scientific techniques are essential to prevent rainwater stagnation and related problems.

Stormy rains in coastal regions often lead to significant agricultural losses. Many farmers rely on traditional methods, which can be detrimental. Excessive rain and lack of sunlight often lead to plant diseases, root rot, and leaf fall. Unscientific methods, such as deep digging and covering the ground with soil, prevent roots from getting enough air. Using fertilizers and pesticides during the rainy season further damages the plants.

To address these issues, creating slopes in jasmine gardens to avoid waterlogging is recommended. Covering the ground with plastic can prevent unwanted grass growth. Implementing a scientific system helps maintain jasmine plants effectively.

Nurseries have begun cultivating jasmine in plastic bags and pots. This method has proven beneficial as it eliminates weed problems and allows for higher yields throughout the year. Manures can be easily applied, and the plants’ locations can be changed conveniently. Diseases and pests are also prevented by this method.

Farmers are encouraged to adopt these scientific techniques to improve jasmine farming, ensuring better crop health and yield.
