Following a hike in petrol and diesel prices, Bengaluru residents may soon face another financial burden. The state government is planning to increase water prices for the first time in 10 years. The water board has already submitted a proposal to the government, signaling a significant rate hike.
Urban Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who previously hinted at the revision of water rates during his visit to the water board, appears likely to approve the proposed increase. The last adjustment to water rates was made in 2014, and the board is now awaiting government approval to implement the new rates.
After the Lok Sabha elections, the government indicated it would reconsider water rates, and discussions are currently underway for a 40% hike across all types of water supply, including domestic and commercial. Despite public opposition, the BWSSB is prepared to proceed with the increase once it receives the green light from the government.
Bengaluru residents, already struggling with the rising costs of essential goods such as petrol and diesel, have voiced their concerns over the planned water rate hike. Many argue that the current water supply is inadequate, and an increase in rates would exacerbate their financial woes.
The public is beginning to question the government’s motives, suggesting that the promises made during the elections are being undermined by these new financial burdens. As the reality of post-election price hikes sets in, many are worried about the potential impact on their daily lives.
