Near the southwestern county of Buan in South Korea, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on Wednesday, according to the weather agency. The quake struck 4 kilometers south-southwest of North Jeolla county, 204 km south of Seoul at 8:26 am with an estimated depth of 8 km. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported the epicenter at 35.7 degrees north latitude and 126.71 degrees east longitude, noting it as the strongest in the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding waters this year. Fifteen aftershocks were reported, with the strongest measuring a magnitude of 3.1 at 1:55pm
KMA officials expect tremors to persist for at least a week, based on past records of earthquakes of similar magnitude. The North Jeolla provincial government stated no facility damage or casualties were reported. The earthquake was felt across many parts of the country, including greater Seoul, Chungcheong provinces, and southeastern regions. Nationwide, 213 cases of feeling tremors were reported as of 8:50 am, including 77 in North Jeolla Province, according to firefighter and interior ministry officials.
