While the Trinamool Congress celebrates its victory in 29 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal, there’s a notable concern in their vote share statistics.
Comparing with the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress’ vote percentage increased, but it decreased compared to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. In contrast, both the BJP and Congress-Left Front alliance saw a decline from 2019 but a slight improvement from 2021.
According to data from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, the Trinamool Congress secured 45.76% of the total votes, up from 43.3% in 2019 but lower than the 48.02% in 2021 Assembly polls. Meanwhile, the BJP’s vote share improved marginally from 38.15% in 2021 to 38.73%.
However, the BJP’s 2024 figure is significantly lower than its best-ever performance of 40.7% in 2019. Similarly, the Congress-Left Front alliance saw an increase from 7.66% in 2021 to 10.35% but declined from 12% in 2019.
Observers suggest that the alliance’s improved vote share should caution the BJP, as their marginal improvement is below one percentage point compared to the previous elections.
