To tackle Bengaluru’s perennial pothole problem, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken the lead in forming a specialized task force committee. This initiative follows Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s  city inspections, emphasizing the pressing need to address infrastructure challenges ahead of the monsoon season.

Under the directive of the Chief Minister, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has led the establishment of a comprehensive operational and monitoring framework. At the zonal level, the committee comprises mobile units led by Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), to swiftly addressing potholes citywide.

Bengaluru, with its extensive road network spanning approximately 12,878 kilometers, grapples with a significant portion of arterial and sub-arterial roads totaling 1,344.84 kilometers. BBMP, entrusted with the development and maintenance of the remaining 11,533.16 kilometers, is intensifying efforts to ensure road quality and safety.

Chief Commissioner Girinath reports commendable progress in pothole closure efforts, with 1,500 potholes already addressed within a week. Plans are underway to expedite the closure of an additional 4,500 potholes across the city. Recognizing the urgency, an extended deadline until June 4 has been granted for RR Nagar and Dasarahalli zones, which face a substantial backlog of over 1,200 potholes.

BBMP is set to launch a mobile application on June 6. This app will facilitate real-time data collection and feedback from traffic police and BBMP marshals, streamlining pothole identification and resolution processes, especially crucial during the impending monsoon season.

BBMP is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for infrastructure development. Approximately 1,400 kilometers of roads will undergo redesigning, with specially equipped vehicles fitted with cameras facilitating rapid assessments based on officer and marshal reports.
