Kayakalpa Initiative Delayed In Indira Canteens

Must read

The implementation of the Kayakalpa initiative in Bengaluru’s Indira canteens, aimed at providing meals to the city’s underprivileged population, has yet to commence. Despite the completion of the tender process by the BBMP for launching new canteens with an updated menu, final approval is pending, with the government awaiting clearance, particularly regarding the inclusion of fish in the menu.

Indira canteens, originally initiated during the tenure of the Congress government, faced neglect during the subsequent BJP administration due to funding shortages, resulting in operational challenges and closures. However, upon assuming office for the second time, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pledged to revitalize and expand the canteens, focusing on areas with high population density and congestion.

Presently, food for the canteens is supplied by Cheftalk, Rewards, and Adamya Chetana, under the corporation’s supervision. With their contracts nearing expiration, tenders have been issued and finalized for food supply in four new packages across different zones of the city. These contracts, spanning two years, await government approval since January.

The initiative aims to serve three meals a day at affordable rates to various vulnerable groups, including the poor, daily wage laborers, and migrants. Plans are underway to establish canteens in all 225 wards, maintaining the existing pricing structure of Rs. 5 for breakfast and Rs. 10 each for lunch and dinner, subsidized by the BBMP.

New menu offers nutritious dishes, banning harmful additives and insisting on quality ingredients. AI cameras and OTP software boost canteen security and transparency. Yet, fund allocation worries and irregular food distribution claims linger. Annual food and canteen upkeep costs hit Rs. 70 crore, stressing efficient management for Kayakalpa initiative triumph.
