Jalna

During the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, several voter ID cards were found in a garbage dump in Maharashtra’s Jalna district. Dr. Krishnanath Panchal, Jalna’s Collector and District Election Officer, stated that these cards are old and were likely discarded by an unidentified person. The Sub-Divisional Officer of Jalna confiscated the dumped voter IDs upon learning about them.

We’re investigating if these individuals got new cards from the Election Commission and why these old ones were discarded, said Dr. Panchal, adding that the responsible person will face appropriate action once identified.

The Lok Sabha elections in Jalna are scheduled for May 13 as part of the fourth phase of the general elections. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second-largest number in the country. Voting in the state is spread over five phases, with the first three held on April 19, April 26, and May 7. The last two phases are scheduled for May 13 and May 20.

In 2019, the BJP won 23 seats in Maharashtra, while its ally Shiv Sena (undivided) took 18. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress won four and one seats, respectively. The results of this election will determine the future political landscape in Maharashtra and the wider Lok Sabha.
