Indian chess player Gukesh D was warmly welcomed at Chennai International Airport on Thursday morning following his victory in the FIDE Candidates. The 17-year-old was greeted with garlands by fans gathered at the airport. A crowd had gathered to welcome India’s Chess hero.

In a press conference upon his arrival in Chennai, Gukesh expressed his happiness about his victory in the FIDE Candidates, stating that it was special for him. He thanked the Tamil Nadu government, his family, friends, mentors, and sponsors for their support. Gukesh mentioned his eagerness to participate in the World Championship.

During Round 14 of the FIDE Candidates, Gukesh, playing with the black pieces, managed to draw against rival championship contender Hikaru Nakamura, securing his victory. Speaking to a source earlier, Gukesh revealed his ambition to perform well at the World Championships. He emphasized his goal of challenging the current champion Ding Liren, expressing his desire to win the crown. Gukesh stated his intention to give his best and prepare adequately to excel in the upcoming championship.
