26-year-old Rajan Singh is rallying voters with the slogan From Toilets to Parliament in South Delhi’s constituency. As the only third-gender candidate in Delhi’s Lok Sabha elections, Singh’s focus is on addressing the lack of basic facilities for the transgender community, notably separate public toilets.
I’m running in the Lok Sabha election to address our community’s essential needs. Despite their importance, we still have to fight for them, Singh told sources.
Starting with the demand for separate restrooms and advocating for transgender representation in Parliament, Singh’s mission is encapsulated in From Toilets to Parliament, signifying the journey from sanitation to legislative representation. Originally from Bihar and residing in Sangam Vihar, Singh is contesting under the symbol of a bucket and plans a constituency march on May 12 to raise awareness.
Singh stresses the need for a national transgender commission to address basic necessities and rights, including separate facilities, job and education reservations, and societal acceptance.
Singh shared personal struggles, including a lengthy identity certification process, highlighting bureaucratic challenges faced by the third gender. Running for office is about asserting the presence and rights of the third gender, Singh highlighted, expressing a commitment to address their basic needs if elected.
