Indian-American Akshay Bhatia stands just 36 holes away from potentially earning his first start at the Masters next week. Leading the Valero Texas Open, the 22-year-old holds a five-shot advantage with two rounds remaining. Augusta National has reserved one spot for the winner of the Valero Texas Open.
Bhatia, who shot a remarkable 63 on the opening day, posted a 2-under 70 in the subsequent round, extending his lead. Despite facing challenges during the round, he managed to maintain his lead amidst adverse weather conditions.
Currently at 11-under 133, Bhatia leads, with contenders like Denny McCarthy, Brendon Todd, and Russell Henley trailing behind. Notably, Rory McIlroy remains in contention at 139 after consistent play in the opening two rounds.
Although Bhatia won the Barracuda Championship last summer, it did not secure his entry into the Masters. The cut saw 82 players advance at 1-over 145, including notable performances from Rico Hoey and Hideki Matsuyama.
