Surge In Demand For Banana Leaves Amid Water Scarcity Crisis

Must read

The cost of banana leaves has skyrocketed by Rs 3 to Rs 5, prompting residents to opt for alternative solutions to minimize water usage. Sellers in Malleshwaram have reported a surge of over 30% in sales, with more people turning to banana leaves and disposable plates as a costly yet practical measure to cope with the city’s dire situation.

Neelamma, a business owner in Malleshwaram’s 10th cross, noted a significant increase in sales, reminiscent of the festive season. Previously priced between Rs 6-8 per leaf, banana leaves are now being sold for Rs 9-13 each or Rs 70 for a set of six leaves.

Karupaswamy, another vendor in Malleshwaram, has observed a rise in sales of disposable areca leaf plates and banana leaves since mid-February. Despite the price surge, customers are willingly purchasing these alternatives.

Shekhar, a resident who has shifted to using banana leaves, highlighted the shift in usage patterns, attributing it to heavy reliance on water tankers in surrounding areas. Families are opting for leaves to reduce water consumption amid the ongoing crisis.
