Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, launched the ‘EV as a Service’ programme by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), aiming to deploy 5,000 electric cars (e-cars) in government departments over the next two years. The programme was launched at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Sunday, marking a significant push for e-mobility in Indian government fleets.
The initiative is part of the government’s push towards cleaner transportation, contributing to the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. As a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), CESL will offer a variety of e-car models tailored to government operational needs through a flexible procurement model. The goal is to cut down carbon emissions, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and enhance India’s energy security.
Khattar, while flagging off an EV rally with multiple vehicle segments, emphasized the importance of clean mobility solutions in reducing emissions. CESL has already deployed nearly 2,000 e-cars across India and is facilitating the roll-out of 17,000 e-buses.
Vishal Kapoor, MD & CEO of CESL, highlighted that the initiative, alongside the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, will accelerate India’s shift to electric mobility, creating a collaborative ecosystem involving manufacturers, fleet operators, and policymakers.
The launch event also featured an exhibition and rally showcasing over 100 electric vehicles, including e-bikes, e-cars, e-buses, and even e-tractors. Senior officials from various government ministries were present at the event.
