After a four-year break, Imtiaz Ali is returning as a director with his upcoming film Amar Singh Chamkila, set to hit screens next month. The movie, a biopic on the late Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila, stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, with the music composed by AR Rahman.
Discussing his collaboration with the Oscar-winning composer, Ali shared insights into their working relationship, which has spanned notable films like Rockstar (2011), Highway (2014), and Tamasha (2015), all acclaimed for their soundtracks. Speaking to sources, Ali expressed, there have never been creative conflicts between me and AR Rahman. I always defer to him.
Ali highlighted Rahman’s intuitive understanding, stating, He grasps things without needing much explanation. When I listen to his compositions for my movies, I marvel at how he captures the exact emotions I envision for each scene.
Ali also spoke fondly of his collaboration with singer Mohit Chauhan, emphasizing their bond and mutual respect. He recalled their first meeting and how it led to Chauhan singing the iconic Tum Se Hi from ‘Jab We Met’ (2007). Reflecting on choosing Chauhan for Rockstar, Ali credited Rahman for suggesting him, acknowledging the singer’s unique ability to bring depth to his songs.
