The death toll from the suspected consumption of tainted alcohol in Punjab’s Sangrur district has risen to 20, officials reported on Saturday. In response, a special investigation team (SIT) comprising four members, led by an additional director general of police (ADGP), has been formed to probe the matter.
The post further assured that the SIT would thoroughly investigate the case to uncover any potential conspiracy and ensure that all those involved face consequences. It urged the public to remain calm and not succumb to unverified rumors.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has requested an immediate report from the Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP regarding the Sangrur hooch tragedy through the Punjab CEO. The commission’s data indicates that around 20 people have died, with 20 others receiving treatment in various hospitals in Sangrur and Patiala districts.
Amidst the tragedy, Congress’ Partap Bajwa questioned CM Bhagwant Mann’s response, urging him to hold the Excise Minister accountable for the incident. Similarly, former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema demanded the CM take moral responsibility for the tragedy and resign from his position. Earlier, police had arrested four individuals in connection with the case.
EC Seeks Hooch Tragedy Report In Punjab

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday sought an immediate report from the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) in the Sangrur hooch tragedy through the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The state CEO had written a letter to the Chief Secretary and the DGP to send a preliminary report and a detailed report on Saturday regarding the entire event.
