Ukrainian tennis sensation, Dayana Yastremska, continued her remarkable journey at the Australian Open by defeating Czech teenager Linda Noskova, securing her place as the first qualifier in 45 years to reach the semifinals of the prestigious tournament. In an all-unseeded quarterfinal clash at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, the 23-year-old Yastremska showcased her prowess, clinching an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 19-year-old Noskova. This triumph marked Yastremska’s eighth consecutive win in Melbourne over the last three weeks and propelled her to the penultimate round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Ranked 93rd in the world, Yastremska exhibited steely focus and aggression throughout the one-hour, 18-minute match, establishing herself as only the second qualifier in Australian Open history to progress to the semifinals. The last qualifier to achieve this feat was Christine Dorey in 1978. Yastremska’s historic victory also positions her as the third Ukrainian, alongside Elina Svitolina and Andrei Medvedev, to reach a major semifinal. The talented player now awaits the outcome of the match between 12th seed Zheng Qinwen and unseeded Anna Kalinskaya to determine her opponent in the quest for her first Grand Slam final appearance.
