Brisbane,
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, has emphasized the need for all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to reassess his decisions during time away from the team, following a recent incident where Maxwell was briefly hospitalized in Adelaide. Maxwell has been excluded from Australia’s upcoming ODI series against the West Indies to provide him with the necessary rest after an intensive cricketing period. The cricketer was hospitalized in Adelaide after a night out, reportedly suffering from dehydration at a pub. The incident occurred while Maxwell was in the city to attend a golf event, and it unfolded after his participation in a musical event alongside renowned fast-bowler Brett Lee and several West Indies players. Maxwell’s last competitive cricket game was on January 15, coinciding with the Melbourne Stars’ final game in the BBL. In response to the situation, Coach McDonald stated, I’ve spoken to Glenn, had a good chat with him yesterday around the incident. As I said before, him looking after himself needs to be a consideration moving forward. McDonald expressed the team’s commitment to Maxwell’s well-being and highlighted the importance of the player taking responsibility for self-care. We want Glenn Maxwell playing cricket for the next three to four years for Australia, McDonald said. While acknowledging Maxwell’s key role in white-ball formats, he mentioned the management measures that will be implemented considering Maxwell’s past injury. McDonald stressed the team’s desire to see Maxwell play for Australia for an extended period. Reflecting on the recent incident, McDonald emphasized that it was an honest mistake, and Maxwell should evaluate his choices during his time away from the team. He expressed gratitude that no significant harm resulted from the incident and mentioned Maxwell’s expected return to play in the West Indies series’ T20 games.
