Manvi
Gram Panchayats in the rural areas of Manvi Taluk have initiated the construction of biogas production units under the Narega scheme. This project aims to address environmental pollution, promote fuel self-sufficiency, and alleviate issues faced by women due to smoke. The selection criteria for constructing individual model biogas plants focus on beneficiaries with cowsheds in rural areas. By implementing biogas plants in households, residents can access cooking gas and electricity. The estimated cost for constructing individual biogas units under the Narega scheme is ₹50,000. Gram Panchayats contribute ₹25,000 towards materials, and the remaining ₹25,000 is the responsibility of the beneficiaries. To encourage the adoption of biogas technology, it has been proposed to grant approval for the construction of biogas plants to all interested individuals without setting a limit on the number of beneficiaries in each Gram Panchayat. However, the lack of awareness among rural residents about the benefits of biogas and the financial constraint of contributing ₹25,000 are hindering widespread participation in the project. In the initial phase, it has been suggested to select at least two beneficiaries in each of the 17 Gram Panchayats in Manvi Taluk for the construction of biogas plants. One individual, R. Sreenivasa, is actively involved in constructing a unit near his house in Sai Camp under Bagawata Gram Panchayat, and the work is currently in progress. Additionally, community biogas plants under the Narega scheme are being considered for implementation in government schools, Akshara Dasoha Centres, Anganwadi Centres, and residential schools near solid waste disposal plants. Local association leaders emphasize the importance of creating effective public awareness in rural areas about this beneficial facility.
