South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced a Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, appointing Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun as the new Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy. This move comes merely three months after the previous Industry chief assumed the role. Presidential Chief of Staff Kim Dae-ki, addressing reporters, highlighted Ahn’s expertise in international trade and his ability to navigate various trade issues. The nomination follows a partial Cabinet reshuffle carried out by President Yoon about two weeks ago, which saw changes in six Cabinet posts. Ahn is an expert in international trade with expertise in both theory and practice, and shows great competence in responding successfully to various trade issues as the current Trade Minister, stated Kim. He expressed expectations for Ahn to accelerate export promotion, foster key strategic industries, and innovate industrial regulations to revitalize the economy and expand economic horizons. Ahn’s appointment follows the tenure of Minister Bang Moon-kyu, who assumed the post in September and is anticipated to run in the general elections in April. Ahn, having served as an adviser to the Foreign Ministry and the Industry Ministry, brings a wealth of experience in international trade and commerce to his new role. He previously held the position of the first Trade Minister under the Yoon administration, addressing critical issues in economic security, such as diversifying South Korea’s supply chains and responding to the US’ Inflation Reduction Act.
