Canberra

A recent Wednesday poll from the independent NGO, the Climate Council, has brought to light a significant shift in Australian driving habits due to the surge in fuel prices. Notably, 71% of Australians are proactively taking measures to cut down on driving expenses. This includes reducing time on the road, minimizing vehicle maintenance, and exploring alternative travel options. The impact on inflation is evident, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting a 7.2% average increase in automotive fuel prices during the third quarter of 2023 (July to September). Survey results also showcase public confidence, with 54% of respondents expressing belief in the government’s proposed fuel efficiency standard as a means to achieve overall cost savings. The federal government, in its April electric vehicle (EV) strategy, signaled the introduction of a fuel efficiency standard to encourage the adoption of low-emission vehicles. However, specific policy details are still pending disclosure. Jennifer Rayner, head of Advocacy for the Climate Council, emphasized the urgency for prompt action, calling on the government to expedite the implementation of the fuel efficiency standard. Additionally, a joint consumer benefit analysis by the Climate Council and Electric Vehicle Council revealed the potential for significant savings—up to A$10,000 ($6,558) on running costs over the lifetime of a vehicle with robust fuel efficiency standards. These findings underscore the tangible financial benefits associated with embracing fuel efficiency.
