Onion Prices Surge In Raichur; Increase Likely To Continue

Must read

Raichur

Over the past week, onion prices in Raichur district have risen by approximately ₹30 per kilogram. From ₹70 last week, the price has suddenly shot up to ₹80. Small and medium-sized onions are now being sold in the range of ₹50 to ₹60, while large-sized onions are commanding ₹80 per kilogram. The price variations across different areas of the district are as follows, Big size onions are selling for ₹70 to ₹80 per kilogram in Raichur, Sirawar, and Turvihal. In Devadurga, they are priced at ₹70, and in Manvi, they are available for ₹65 per kilogram. Medium size onions are being sold for ₹60 in Kavitala, Sirwar, and Mudagal. Small size onions are available for ₹50 in Hattichinadagani and Jalahalli. Businessmen Farooq and Manmanta attributed the recent price surge to reduced food consumption during the Navratri and Vijayadashami fasting period. However, even after the festivals, the price of onions remains elevated. Increased demand for transplanted chicken and higher meat consumption are among the factors contributing to this increase. The price of onions in the market is expected to continue rising until the arrival of new red onions. Currently, summer onions are available, and new onions from Nashik’s Lasalgaon market are being sold for ₹600 to ₹700 per quintal. Onion prices are on the rise in various onion-growing regions, including Manmad, Niphad, Nashik, Yewla, and Chandwad. These onions are being supplied to districts in Hyderabad and Karnataka. It’s worth noting that farmers in Nashik had previously protested when the central government imposed an export ban on onions, leading to a drop in prices. With Diwali approaching, the rise in onion prices is seen as positive news for onion growers but may pose challenges for consumers.
