State Minorities Commission Chairman Abdul Azim said that the authorities should take bold and tough decisions to maintain law and order.  He was presiding over a meeting organized at the District Commissioner’s Hall on Tuesday on communal harmony in the district.

The incident of stone pelting during the Eid Milad procession in Ragigudda was indeed a bad incident. Since the incident, I have been in touch with the District Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner  and have visited the spot on Tuesday.

It is a good thing that the police officers brought the situation under control within hours of the incident. In connection with this incident, 50 to 60 people have been arrested, 32 cases have been registered and action has been taken. Permission should not be granted if it is found that such processions/events will endanger law, peace and order. Provocative cutouts, banners, flexes should not be allowed. If it has to be put up, a competent officer should be appointed for it and he should check all the banners, cutouts and give permission only after reporting that there are no provocative elements and no problems.

Efficient officers should be appointed for sensitive areas. If it is found that there is a threat to the peace and order, they should take a non-partisan, non-sectarian and tough stand and establish peace. And to achieve harmony, he suggested that the authorities should adopt new methods to gain the trust of the people.

Karnataka State Minorities Commission Secretary Salma Firdoz,  Special Duty Officer Mujibullah Jafari, Deputy Commissioner Dr R  Selvamani, District Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar, Corporation Commissioner Mayanna Gowda, District Minority Welfare Officer Preeti, Police and Revenue Department guards and others were present in the meeting.
