T20 cricket will make a triumphant return to the Olympic Games in 2028, marking its inclusion as an additional sport since the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted its final approval for the inclusion of T20 cricket in the Los Angeles Olympic Games during the 141st IOC Session held in Mumbai. The decision received near-unanimous approval from the gathering of 99 IOC members, with only two members opposing it and two abstaining from the vote. While approving the inclusion of five additional sports, including cricket, squash, baseball and softball, flag football, and lacrosse in the sports program of the 2028 Olympic Games, some IOC members expressed concerns about the limited exposure of these sports to the majority of IOC members and their potential impact on the overall quota of participating athletes. The inclusion of these sports will increase the total number of participants to 11,092, exceeding the IOC’s desired limit of 10,500 participants. The IOC’s Sports Programme Commission will collaborate with the International Federations responsible for the additional sports and traditional sports to work on reducing the number of participants to align with the IOC’s quota.
