Speculation regarding a potential ban on carpooling in Bangalore has been circulating, causing confusion and concern among commuters. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has stepped forward to address these rumors and dispel any misinformation. In a statement shared on Twitter, Minister Reddy categorically stated that the government has not banned carpooling in the city. No official notice has been issued to this effect, and the claims of a carpooling ban are unsubstantiated. The issue at hand revolves around the licensing of carpooling apps operating in Bangalore. As of now, these apps have not obtained official licenses from the government. Reddy points out that unlicensed carpooling services cannot be considered legitimate. He further explains that certain conditions will apply to carpooling, but emphasizes that these platforms must first seek permission from the government. Reddy emphasizes that all citizens should comply with the rules and regulations set forth by the government. Using non-commercial private vehicles with white number plates for carpooling purposes is considered illegal. However, commercial vehicles with yellow number plates can engage in carpooling as long as they adhere to the proper guidelines. Minister Ramalinga Reddy’s statement serves to clarify that carpooling remains a viable and legal transportation option in Bangalore.
