GST reforms fulfil citizens’ dreams, says Joshi

New Delhi

Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday said that the Next Gen GST reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have fulfilled the aspirations of ordinary citizens by easing financial burdens.

In a post on social platform X, Joshi highlighted that reduced taxes on household goods, electronic items, and vehicles have brought relief to middle-class and poor families. “The GST reforms have empowered families, reduced costs, and infused joy in homes across the nation,” he said.

The remarks come as the government steps up efforts to ensure GST benefits reach consumers directly. The Consumer Affairs Department is actively monitoring e-commerce platforms for fair practices and transparency, particularly in passing GST benefits to buyers.

Joshi recently warned that strict action would be taken against online platforms imposing hidden charges or unfair fees such as extra costs on Cash-on-Delivery (COD) orders. Such practices, he said, constitute “dark patterns” that exploit buyers and violate fair trade principles. Several complaints have already been registered, and investigations are underway.

Authorities are also reviewing compliance by companies selling everyday essentials — including FMCG goods, pulses, and electronics — to ensure GST rate cuts are passed on to consumers.

GST collections in September reached Rs 1.89 lakh crore, marking a 9.1% year-on-year growth, the fastest in four months. Officials believe that ensuring the reforms benefit end-users will boost demand and strengthen domestic economic growth.

Joshi’s statement underscores the government’s aim to make GST a tool that delivers direct financial relief to citizens while promoting economic development.
