Youth urged to lead fight against injustice: NHRC

Justice Through Action

New Delhi
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Member Vijaya Bharathi Sayani has urged young people to actively raise their voices against injustice and work toward a fairer and more inclusive society. She made this appeal during the closing session of the NHRC’s 3rd Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for 2025–26 on Saturday.

Addressing 74 interns from 21 states and union territories, Sayani encouraged them to become “active defenders of human dignity.” She asked the students to apply their learning to promote social good and uphold constitutional values in their personal and professional lives.

The OSTI programme, which began on August 22 under the leadership of NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal, aimed to help university students understand key human rights issues. The training included sessions on international law, custodial justice, women’s and children’s rights, and the protection of marginalised communities. Interns also participated in interactive discussions and virtual visits to Tihar Jail, a Delhi police station, and the Asha Kiran Shelter Home to gain practical insight into human rights work.

Sayani congratulated the participants for completing the programme and praised their enthusiasm and commitment. Highlighting NHRC’s mission, she said the Commission continues to promote equality, mental health awareness, and justice for vulnerable groups.

She concluded her speech by calling on youth to stay alert, question wrongdoing, and become active contributors to justice and peace. NHRC Joint Secretary Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak also lauded the interns for their engagement and emphasised the importance of understanding how public institutions safeguard human rights in India.
