The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to enhance public amenities in Bangalore with the construction of 46 additional precast toilets across the city. This initiative comes as a continuation of BBMP’s commitment to improving sanitation and accessibility for citizens. Under Phase II of the project, which was initiated by the civic body two years ago, these 46 precast toilets will be constructed at a cost of Rs 281 crore. Notably, these facilities will remain open 24×7, ensuring round-the-clock access to clean and hygienic public restrooms. This development is particularly crucial for enhancing the city’s infrastructure and public services. The decision to construct these additional toilets stems from the fact that work on 15 out of the 25 toilets that were initiated two years ago remains incomplete. Under the first phase of the project, which aimed to construct 25 precast toilets at an estimated cost of Rs 168 crore, only 10 have been successfully completed so far. BBMP’s approach to precast toilet construction is driven by the need for efficiency and speed. These facilities offer clean and dry toilet amenities, sensor-based flushing, and water-saving tap fixtures. They are also equipped with odor elimination systems and feature sufficient solar electric lighting, ensuring a safer and more pleasant user experience. Bhimesh H, Executive Engineer at the BBMP’s Solid Waste Management Department, explained that the delay in Phase I was primarily due to land issues, opposition from citizens regarding public toilet locations, and challenges associated with providing water and sewerage connections. While the phase may require an extension of the deadline, the tender process for Phase II has concluded, with the work order pending. Crucially, Phase II includes provisions for a five-year operation and maintenance plan, with the contracted company responsible for maintaining human resources for toilet upkeep.
