Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest black comedy Jailer is creating history at the box office. The movie led by the 72-year-old Superstar is on the verge of becoming the highest-grosser in the history of Tamil cinema and judging by things right now, it’s clear that it’s not yet done making history.
During the audio release event of Jailer, producer Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures foretold the movie’s monstrous commercial success. Not three but five generations revel in Rajini sir’s movies. He isn’t a record-breaker, but a record-maker, he had said.
Kalanithi Maran was right. Rajinikanth’s movies don’t chase records but set new industry benchmarks for others to follow. Rajinikanth’s 2.0 holds the record of being the biggest-ever earner from Tamil cinema with a global collection of over Rs 665 crore. And Jailer is fast closing the gap to break that record. With Jailer showing no signs of fatigue at the box office, Sun Pictures is unlikely to hasten the movie’s digital release and stop it from achieving its full commercial success.
Sun Pictures has remained tight-lipped about Jailer’s OTT partners. With Jailer doing so well, Sun Pictures could have its pick of the litter and even demand a handsome price for the streaming rights of Jailer. The Rajinikanth starrer is yet to breach the Rs 200 crore marks at the Tamil Nadu box office, and the trade is confident that it will be achieved in a matter of time. Not Just in Tamil Nadu, Jailer is also doing amazing business in Kerala and Karnataka.
