Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis maestro, showcased a remarkable comeback at the US Open following his disappointment in the 2021 final against Daniil Medvedev. In his opening-round match against Alexandre Muller of France, Djokovic demonstrated his prowess with a commanding performance, securing a victory with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. This win also marks Djokovic’s return to the top of the ATP World Rankings, displacing the defending US Open Champion Carlos Alcaraz on September 11. Djokovic will begin his 390th week at the top, setting a new record in the process. After his victory, Djokovic shared his excitement in his on-court interview, expressing his pleasure in being back on Arthur Ashe Stadium and acknowledging the honor of playing before the audience. Former American President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were also in attendance, witnessing Djokovic’s dominating performance on the court. Djokovic has his sights set on securing his 4th US Open title in his 10th appearance and aiming to achieve his third career appearance in the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments during the same season, a feat he previously accomplished in 2021 and 2015. His next opponent in the second round will be Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who upset NCAA champion Ethan Quinn of the United States in a previous match. Djokovic acknowledged Zapata Miralles’ skills, referring to him as a clay-court specialist who has adapted to hard courts. Reflecting on his upcoming match, Djokovic stated, There’s no easy opponent, obviously I respect everyone. I don’t underestimate anybody and try to give my best. Hopefully, I can get another win in a few days. As Djokovic continues his journey in the US Open, his determination and performance will undoubtedly keep the tennis world captivated.
