The SGM Eye Bank of MM Joshi Eye Institute has launched a QR code for pledging eyes for donation online without having to visit an eye bank. Those interested in pledging their eyes can easily fill the Google form after scanning the code.
To spread awareness regarding pledging for eye donation and meeting the huge gap in demand and supply, SGM Eye Bank has come up with a QR code, which will be displayed at public places across the city.
By pledging, a person is not forced to donate their eyes. When a person makes the pledge, they will talk about it with their family members. Thus the family knows about eye donation and during the time of death, they can make a decision easily, said Dr KV Satyamurthy from MM Joshi Eye Institute.
Dr Srinivas Joshi of MM Joshi Eye Institute said that people who wish to pledge for eye donation can easily scan the QR code and get enrolled. Also, a certificate will be generated automatically and sent to the potential donor through email. MM Joshi Eyes Institute has planned 25 programmes and in all these events, the QR code will be displayed. The programmes on eye donation will be held at schools, colleges and other places including religious places and awareness will be created through social media, he added.
The QR code will help reach more people. Looking at the response to the QR code, we will approach the education department and intensify the campaign to encourage pledges through this method, said Dr Joshi.Religious leaders, movie stars, politicians and others need to campaign and motivate people to pledge for eye donation. Last year, after the death of Puneeth Rajkumar, more than 11,000 people pledged their eyes for donation. However, this year in the past six months, hardly 3,600 pledges have been made for eye donation. With the QR code initiative, we aim to reach more pledges than last year, he added.
