The global e-commerce juggernaut Amazon has fallen prey to a hacking scheme, leading to a significant monetary loss. Yeshwantpur police have taken swift action by apprehending a suspect involved in this audacious act of hacking Amazon’s accounts and orchestrating a deceitful operation that cost the company lakhs of rupees. The Yeswantpur police station’s diligent efforts have uncovered an intricate web of international fraud, where expensive mobile phones were purchased under the pretense of being customers of Amazon and subsequently returned. One individual, Chirag Gupta, a student enrolled in a reputable private engineering college in the city, was arrested for his role in this elaborate scheme. Gupta, a resident of Mattikere, had amassed an astonishing sum of Rs 30 lakh in his bank account through his illicit activities. Authorities executed the arrest with a raid that yielded substantial evidence, including 16 Apple iPhones, a Macbook, a desktop computer, a gaming laptop, and AirPods collectively valued at Rs 26.34 lakhs. Additionally, cash amounting to Rs 2.5 lakhs was seized during the operation. Investigations have revealed that Chirag Gupta, originally from Maharashtra and residing in a PG accommodation near Mattikere, became embroiled in an international hacker network through the Telegram app. His involvement escalated as he connected with Atati, a perpetrator within this network. Atati lured Gupta into this scheme, demonstrating the allure of financial gain. Gupta was assigned the task of executing fraudulent transactions by posing as an Amazon customer and placing orders for high-value iPhones. This elaborate operation provided Gupta with a cut ranging from 10 to 20 percent of the value of the fraudulent transactions, illustrating the extent of the deceitful operation. The police have successfully unveiled the mechanics of this scam, providing insights into the tactics employed by cybercriminals to exploit online marketplaces.
