Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has denied making any double-meaning remark about actor Trisha, recalling his brief arrest and questioning over the controversy.
Speaking at a DMK event, Udhayanidhi said he had only remarked that “water should flow in the Cauvery” while addressing a farmers’ protest in Thanjavur. He maintained that he neither named Trisha nor made any objectionable reference to her.
The remark triggered controversy after it was interpreted as a reference to the actor. Udhayanidhi recalled that on August 2, Tamil Nadu Police arrived at his Chennai residence and took him to Thanjavur for questioning.
He said he initially believed the police had come because of his criticism of the government during the protest. Udhayanidhi said he had called the Chief Minister a “dummy Chief Minister” and criticised the government over its handling of farmers’ issues.
He again rejected the allegation about the Trisha remark, saying, “I only said that water should flow into the Cauvery. Nothing else crossed my mind.”
Udhayanidhi also criticised the Vijay-led TVK government, accusing it of arresting people over minor issues and calling its functioning authoritarian. He further mocked the party’s MLAs and claimed that many people were unfamiliar with their names and ministerial portfolios.
The controversy remains a political flashpoint in Tamil Nadu, with Udhayanidhi continuing to defend his statement while attacking the ruling TVK government over what he described as excessive use of police action.
