The Karnataka High Court has granted relief to former minister B Nagendra by staying a key condition imposed in his bail order.
Nagendra is facing allegations in the multi-crore money laundering case involving the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. The court has now relaxed a restriction that required him to obtain prior permission before travelling outside Karnataka.
The Special Court for elected representatives had granted Nagendra bail on October 14, 2024, while imposing several conditions. One of them required him to obtain written permission from the court before leaving Karnataka.
The High Court has stayed this particular condition, providing Nagendra greater freedom to travel outside the State.
The case relates to alleged illegal diversion and laundering of hundreds of crores of rupees belonging to the Valmiki Corporation. The Enforcement Directorate and other agencies have been investigating the alleged financial irregularities.
The travel restriction had earlier required Nagendra to seek the court’s permission before undertaking any journey outside Karnataka. The High Court’s latest order effectively provides relief from that requirement.
The development comes amid continuing legal proceedings in the case. Other bail conditions imposed on Nagendra have not been stated to have been affected by the High Court’s order.
WHAT THE RELIEF MEANS
The High Court’s order provides Nagendra relief from the specific bail condition requiring prior court permission to travel outside Karnataka. He can now travel without seeking permission under this particular restriction. However, the order concerns the travel condition and does not mean that the allegations against him have been cleared. The underlying investigation and legal proceedings in the Valmiki Corporation case will continue.
