Curran ready to fill England’s all-rounder void after Stokes’ Test retirement

Sam Curran eyes England Test return after Ben Stokes’ retirement opens opportunities nationwide

Manchester

England all-rounder Sam Curran has expressed his willingness to step into the void left by Ben Stokes following the Test captain’s retirement, saying he would embrace the opportunity if selected. While Curran has not featured in Test cricket since England’s home series against India in August 2021, he remains determined to earn a recall through consistent performances.

The 28-year-old said representing England remained his biggest motivation and that he would be ready if the selectors called upon him to strengthen the Test side.

“Yeah, of course,” Curran said when asked whether he would welcome the chance. “I just want to perform my best, and whenever the time comes, they decide whoever is going to replace Stokesy. Playing for England is amazing and I’m a competitive guy.”

Curran added that his focus has always been on contributing whenever he takes the field, regardless of the format.

“When I’ve got a ball or bat in my hand, I just try to do my best, so we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Since his last Test appearance nearly five years ago, Curran has become a regular fixture in England’s white-ball squads. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable option in limited-overs cricket, although he has been unable to force his way back into the red-ball setup.

With England now searching for a reliable seam-bowling all-rounder to succeed Stokes, Curran’s experience and versatility could bring him back into contention. He has played 24 Tests, scoring useful lower-order runs and taking important wickets, showcasing the skills required for English conditions.

Curran is currently part of England’s squad for the ongoing five-match Twenty20 International series against India and has also been named in the squad for the upcoming three-match One-Day International series later this month.

England will take on India in the second T20 International at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Curran hoping strong performances in the white-ball series can strengthen his case for a long-awaited return to the Test arena.
