Illegal liquor sales spark public outrage in Dandeli

Dandeli

In Dandeli, growing allegations of illegal liquor sales and violations of excise regulations have triggered strong public criticism against the Excise Department, with residents questioning the lack of effective enforcement action.

Locals claim that several liquor outlets in different parts of the city are operating outside permitted hours and in violation of licensing rules. According to reports, some shops are allegedly opening as early as 7 a.m., well before the legally permitted time of 10 a.m., causing inconvenience to school children, pedestrians, and morning commuters.

Residents allege that in areas such as JN Road, Sunday Market backroad, Link Road, and Barchi Road, liquor is being sold openly at inflated prices during early morning hours. This has reportedly led to disturbances in public spaces, raising concerns about law and order in the locality.

There are also serious allegations that several establishments are functioning as bars and restaurants without valid or renewed licenses. Some outlets are accused of running hidden liquor-serving cabins within eateries, creating confusion among customers and blurring the line between family restaurants and licensed bars.

In addition, unauthorized liquor sales are reportedly taking place in residential areas and small shops in Gandhinagar, Old Dandeli, and along highways such as Haliyal Road and Birampali Cross. Locals claim that despite repeated complaints, no strict enforcement action has been taken by the authorities.

Public anger is mounting, with residents accusing the Excise Department of “blind negligence” and inaction despite clear violations being visible. Many are demanding immediate inspections and a special crackdown on illegal liquor trade and non-compliant establishments.

Citizens have urged the Excise Department to launch a comprehensive enforcement drive to shut down illegal outlets, ensure compliance with licensing rules, and restore public confidence in regulatory oversight.
