Portugal edge Nigeria in World Cup warm-up despite Ronaldo’s missed chances

Leiria

Portugal warmed up for the FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria, although captain Cristiano Ronaldo was left frustrated after missing several clear scoring opportunities.

The 41-year-old forward, preparing for a record-tying sixth World Cup appearance, failed to add to his remarkable tally of 143 international goals despite being presented with two excellent chances during the international friendly in Leiria.

Ronaldo, who started the match and remained on the field longer than any other outfield player, was unable to convert one-on-one opportunities in both halves. The veteran striker was eventually substituted in the 65th minute as Portugal coach Roberto Martínez rotated his squad ahead of the tournament.

Despite Ronaldo’s missed chances, Portugal managed to secure the win thanks to goals from Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição.

Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute through Neto, who finished off a well-worked move to give the hosts an early advantage. Nigeria responded strongly and found an equaliser 14 minutes later when Akor Adams capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the scores.

The match remained evenly poised for much of the second half before substitute Conceição produced the decisive moment in the 75th minute. Cutting in from the right flank, the winger curled a superb left-footed effort into the far corner to seal victory for Portugal.

The result provides valuable momentum for Portugal ahead of the World Cup, where they will be aiming to challenge for the title with a squad blending experienced stars and emerging talents. Ronaldo’s fitness and leadership remain key assets despite his advancing age, and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to play a central role in the team’s campaign.

Nigeria, which failed to qualify for the World Cup, nevertheless delivered a competitive performance and tested Portugal throughout the encounter.

Portugal will now turn its focus to Group K of the World Cup, where it is scheduled to face Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia in the group stage as it seeks a strong start to the tournament.
