More than a trophy: Inside Punjab FC’S football factory

Punjab’s Football Factory

Punjab FC’s recent 3-0 victory over Zinc Football Academy to clinch the AIFF Elite Youth League title was more than just a win, it was a loud statement about the “system” taking over the state’s sporting landscape. While the silverware was earned in Garhshankar, the real work is happening in a massive network of training centers that is quietly reshaping Punjab’s footballing DNA.

Just last month, the club expanded its grassroots footprint to 32 centers, launching new hubs in towns like Moga, Patiala, and Batala. Each center takes in 75 young players, including a dedicated quota for girls, ensuring that professional coaching reaches beyond the big cities.

“The aim is to create the right environment for young players to learn and enjoy the game,” said Bikramjit Singh, Deputy Lead of the Football Development Centre. This isn’t just about volume, it’s about a unified model where a child in a small village receives the same technical training as a player in the elite academy.

The results of this long-term investment are no longer theoretical. The Punjab FC academy, rated five stars by the AIFF, has already produced 15 Indian internationals.

  • SAFF Success: In a recent India vs. Pakistan U-20 match, Punjab FC graduates scored every single goal in a 3-0 win, with Vishal Yadav and Omang Dodum finding the net.
  • Back-to-Back Titles: The club’s U-17 side has now secured consecutive national titles, proving that their success is a repeatable process rather than a one-off fluke.

For decades, Punjab was synonymous with hockey and kabaddi and now football is moving from the margins to the center. Training grounds that were once empty are now buzzing daily with structured sessions.

“For us, the focus has always been on building a complete development ecosystem,” says Technical Director Giuseppe Cristaldi. “The expansion and the success are outcomes of the same philosophy: consistent coaching and clear pathways.”

By integrating education, nutrition, and psychological support into their training, Punjab FC is convincing families that football is a viable career path. As the club continues to dominate youth leagues, they aren’t just winning trophies, they are building the future of Indian football.
