Japan-Vietnam seek deeper energy, minerals ties

Japan and Vietnam have agreed to deepen cooperation in energy minerals and new technology during talks in Hanoi as global risks rise Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met Vietnamese leaders on Saturday The leaders focused on economic security stable energy supply and stronger supply chains across the region.

They discussed cooperation in artificial intelligence semiconductors space technology and critical minerals to reduce dependence on limited global suppliers and improve resilience in trade networks.

Japan also promised support for Vietnam’s energy needs including helping secure crude oil supplies for key refineries through regional partnerships as demand grows in Asia. The talks come as Vietnam seeks stable fuel sources amid rising prices and global uncertainty that affects its fast growing economy.

Japan is also working to reduce reliance on China for rare earth minerals while Vietnam aims to develop its mining and processing capacity with foreign help. Officials said both countries see strong potential for growth in trade investment and technology exchange over the next few years. Japan’s regional strategy also supports a free and open Indo Pacific aimed at improving stability and economic growth across Asia.

Leaders said they will continue talks to strengthen energy security supply chains and technology partnerships in coming months for long term cooperation. They added that closer ties will help both nations face global challenges such as conflicts price shocks and supply shortages more effectively.

Vietnam has been seeking more foreign investment while Japan increases efforts to build stronger supply networks in Asia for future stability. Trade between the two countries continues to grow with Japan remaining one of Vietnam’s top investors despite changes in global markets.

Both sides said they will expand cooperation in minerals clean energy and advanced industries to support economic development and regional resilience. The meeting ended with agreement to deepen dialogue and strengthen partnerships that support growth stability and innovation across the Indo Pacific.
