Delimitation: Kavitha proposesUS Senate-like model for RS

Hyderabad

Telangana Rakshana Sena founder K Kavitha on Saturday proposed giving the Rajya Sabha powers similar to the United States Senate to protect the rights and interests of states during the delimitation process.

She said every state should receive an equal number of Rajya Sabha seats, regardless of population or size.

Speaking at a “meet the press” programme, Kavitha said some states may gain or lose Lok Sabha seats after delimitation, but equal representation in the Rajya Sabha could maintain balance among all states.

She suggested that all major bills, including finance bills, should require approval from the Rajya Sabha. According to her, if states disagree with a bill, the Upper House should have the authority to stop it. She said such a system would strengthen India’s federal structure and protect the political and financial interests of states.

Kavitha added that the Centre should fix a population benchmark while deciding seats under delimitation. She said she would submit detailed suggestions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and any future Delimitation Commission.

During the interaction, Kavitha clarified that her criticism of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was political and not personal. She also accused the BRS, Congress and BJP of being affected by corruption.

The Telangana Rakshana Sena leader announced “Panchajanya,” a set of five promises focused on welfare measures, including free education and healthcare. She further stated that her party would dedicate 95 per cent of its attention to Telangana-related issues and work towards protecting the state’s interests in national politics and governance matters.
