TRAI seeks roadmap for smart ‘talking’ cars

NEW DELHI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has officially begun the process of building a regulatory backbone for the next generation of smart vehicles. The regulator released a consultation paper titled “Regulatory Framework for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication,” a move that could fundamentally change how Indians drive.

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) is a wireless technology that allows a car to “talk” to its surroundings in real-time. It encompasses four main areas of interaction:

  • V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle): Cars sharing speed and location data to avoid collisions.
  • V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure): Cars communicating with traffic lights or road signs to optimize traffic flow.
  • V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian): Alerts for pedestrians using mobile devices to prevent accidents.
  • V2N (Vehicle-to-Network): Connecting cars to the cloud for real-time maps and software updates.

The move follows a request from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in late 2025. India has quickly become the world’s fastest-growing market for connected cars, seeing a 25% surge in adoption in 2024. With nearly 75% of global passenger cars now sold with embedded cellular connectivity, India is looking to standardize the spectrum and licensing rules needed to support this tech at scale.

TRAI is inviting feedback from industry experts, tech companies, and automakers to shape the future of smart mobility.

  • Stakeholder Comments: Due by May 28, 2026.
  • Counter-comments: Due by June 11, 2026.

As 5G connectivity is predicted to be in over half of all cars sold globally by 2028, TRAI’s framework will be crucial for enabling features like autonomous driving and advanced road safety in India. The final recommendations will likely address which frequency bands will be dedicated to “car-talk” to ensure these life-saving communications remain interference-free.
